30 Days on a Prairie Farm: Harvest

Day 11: It's the end, the reward, the reaping of what we've sown.

Harvest has always been my very favorite. And that's despite the fact that particular time of year has become the most busy for our young family, as we learn to juggle school functions, practices for a small town musical, the start of Awana and new-this-year: flag football.

Still, despite the crazy, it's my favorite. The weather cools, and we pull out sweatshirts and coveralls. The early mornings see farmers gathering equipment at field's edge, preparing for the day. Preparing to bring in the harvest. And preparing to harvest a crop we have labored over, worried and prayed over, protected from intruding insects and encroaching weeds.

Ready: the sun rises on another harvest morning at the Spangler farm.

Certainly, I'd be lying if I didn't add that, by six or so weeks in, I'm ready for it to be over. Ready for my husband to be around the home during daylight hours, ready for the slower-pace of winter to set in. To turn our sights to something different. To be done packing lunches and hauling dinners. To have the crop safely stored away in a bin.

Still, it's my favorite. It's the one time of year we're all needed on the farm, and we all have a job to do. It's the grand celebration of one year ending, and a turning of the page to the next year's beginning.

And we're not going to talk about the 2012 crop. We'll just think ahead to 2013. We're optimistic that way.
