My Generation

You Can Take the Kid Out of the Country…

Wonder what a farm kid finds fascinating about life in town? Here's what our kids learned during our recent Ag in the Classroom trip.

When I posted a couple weeks ago about our county Farm Bureau's trip to a suburban school (see that blog HERE) – along with assorted farmers, farm kids and livestock – a reader wondered what those city kids might tell our farm kids.

A great question, for sure. And though I can't tell you what they might share, I can tell you what impressed my kids: sewer grates. Seriously. I think we need to get out more.

Nathan was truly amazed and wondered what in the world could be down there. It didn't take long for Jenna to get in on it either. "Can't I go down there and see?" he asked.

And when asked what she thought was most interesting about the urban kids, Jenna said that she was surprised they didn't all want to let Buttercup the Bottle calf suck their fingers. "Why not? It doesn't hurt. But only a few kids wanted to. I don't know why."

What's a little slimy calf saliva among friends, no?
