OptRx has beam to light up crop sensing

OptRx is a new crop sensing system from Ag Leader that can be operated even in the dark. While some sensing systems measure sunlight reflected by the crop canopy, OptRx generates its own light beam, making it possible to operate in low light or even no light. Sensor data is logged and mapped for further analysis or for real-time variable-rate nitrogen application. Suggested list price: $3,000 per sensor. (Number of sensors required varies. Costs vary with options.) Call Ag Leader, Ames, Iowa, at 515-232-5363, or visit www.agleader.com.

Check plant vigor with CropSpec

CropSpec is a new on-the-go crop canopy sensor and variable-rate application system from TopCon. CropSpec technology includes two optical sensors mounted on the cab of a tractor, sprayer or other equipment. The sensors use pulsing laser diodes to measure plant reflectance. The measurements are related to chlorophyll content and nitrogen levels. An onboard processor analyzes the data to determine if additional fertilizer is needed to optimize yields. Variable-rate maps can be prepared for later application, or the information can be fed directly into the rate controller for real-time crop sensing and variable-rate fertilizer application. Suggested list price: $24,500. Call TopCon, Olathe, Kan., at 913-928-2630, or visit www.topconpa.com.
