Getting grain to port and fertilizer to fields takes significant coordination and monetary support that in recent weeks has been the topic of choice for a handful of federal committees.
This week, members of the House Transportation Committee and the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee gathered to sign a completed Water Resources Development Act, with the full text released Thursday.
The bill includes several provisions important to agriculture, including authorization for dredging and other activities on main waterways used to ship commodities and other ag inputs, as well as a measure that would allow deepening of some U.S. ports ahead of the completion of the Panama Canal expansion.
Meanwhile on land, northern growers and regional legislators continue to worry about rail service delays that has tied up shipments of fertilizer. Though a hearing with the Surface Transportation Board earlier this spring resulted in mandatory updates on service improvement, some legislators worry the mandate won't be enough.
