A representative of USDA's Farm Service Agency will be one of the speakers at the Ag Marketing Club meetings in central Iowa Nov. 17-20. The FSA program specialist will be on hand to answer questions about the Dec. 1 deadline to purchase Non-insured Assistance Program (NAP) coverage at your county FSA office. Most farmers will need to buy NAP coverage in order to participate in USDA's new SURE program in 2009.
SURE is USDA's new Supplemental Revenue assurance program that was created as part of the new 2008 Farm Bill. SURE is USDA's new crop disaster program. It replaces the ad hoc disaster programs that used to come along each time widespread crop production problems arose in areas of the country.
Beware of December 1 deadline for NAP
Since this fast-approaching December 1 deadline falls on a Monday, the majority of Iowa farmers are not aware of this deadline or how this new Supplemental Revenue program works. There will be very few meetings to educate farmers prior to December 1, so be sure to attend one of these four meetings Nov. 17-20 in central Iowa if you need to learn more about SURE and NAP.
Crop marketing, revenue and income tax strategies
There will be four different dates and sites for you to choose from to attend an Ag Marketing Club meeting in Central Iowa. These meetings are open to the public and a small registration fee may be charged at the door—depending which meeting you attend. The topic is "Crop Marketing, Revenue and Income Tax Strategies." The main presenter is Steve Johnson, ISU Extension farm management specialist, and he will be joined on the program by a local FSA office representative.
