United Nations General Assembly declared Dec. 5 as World Soil Day.

World Soil Day will be celebrated today at the Rome headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

World Soil Day celebrates the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to human well-being. It was created by resolution in 2002 by the International Union of Soil Sciences and in December 2013, the UN General Assembly declared Dec. 5 as World Soil Day.

This year's theme is "Soils and pulses, a symbiosis for life."

The charts below show some of the threats to soil functions.
