Environmental groups reporting EPA revokes registration of Enlist Duo

Dow AgroSciences still confident Enlist Duo herbicide is safe and will work with EPA to address concerns

Three environmental watchdog groups joined forces to issue a press release Wednesday, saying the Environmental Protection Agency has announced it is revoking the registration of Enlist Duo.

Enlist Duo is the herbicide for crops with Dow AgroSciences new Enlist trait that provides safety to applications of 2,4-D. Enlist Duo contains a new formulation of 2,4-D that has very different properties than the original chemical.

Dow AgroSciences is still confident Enlist Duo is safe and will work with EPA to address concerns.

The three groups include Earthjustice, Center for Food Safety and Center for Biological Diversity. Their release states,  "Enlist Duo is a toxic combination of glyphosate and 2,4-D that Dow AgroSciences created for use on the next generation of genetically engineered crops, designed to withstand being drenched with this potent herbicide cocktail."

EPA's action reported by these groups is in response to a year-long legal challenge by a "coalition of conservation groups."

Paul Achitoff spoke on behalf of Earthjustice. His is managing attorney for the group. "With this action, EPA confirms the toxic nature of this lethal cocktail of chemicals, and has stepped back from the brink," he says. "Glyphosate is a probable carcinogen and is wiping out the Monarch butterfly. 2,4-D also causes serious human health effects, and the combination also threatens endangered wildlife. This must not, and will not, be how we grow our food."

Dow AgroSciences issued a statement early Wednesday refuting these assertions. Garry Hamlin released this statement to Penton Media in response to an inquiry about the company's knowledge of the ruling.

"Dow AgroScience is confident in the extensive data supporting Enlist Duo herbicide. We are working with EPA to quickly provide further assurances that our product's conditions of registered use will continue to protect the environment, including threatened and endangered plant species.

"Recognizing the pressing needs of U.S. farmers for access to Enlist Duo to counter the rapidly increasing spread of resistant weeds - and in light of the comprehensive nature of the regulatory assessments already conducted to support the Enlist Duo registration - we expect that these new evaluations will result in a prompt resolution of outstanding issues."
