Gift of $125,000 to Support Iowa 4-H Center Programs

Florine and Ron Swanson, through a deferred gift, will donate $125,000 to establish the Swanson Family 4-H Camp Fund to support summer camp staff and programs at Iowa 4-H Center.

Florine and Ron Swanson, through a deferred gift, will donate $125,000 to establish the Swanson Family 4-H Camp Fund to support summer camp staff and programs at the Iowa 4-H Center. The Iowa 4-H Foundation owns the 1,100-acre state camp near Madrid, Iowa, with educational programs provided by Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development.

The Swansons farm near the town of Galt in Wright County in north central Iowa. Both are graduates of Iowa State University and longtime supporters of the Iowa 4-H program. Florine Swanson served as executive director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation from 1987 to 2005.

"We're grateful the Swansons have chosen to support Iowa youth and the 4-H Center with this gift," says Iowa 4-H Foundation executive director Joe Leisz. "The camp has played an important role in their lives. Florine fondly remembers participating in camp many times as a 4-H member, and shares how special the pool was to many farm kids who otherwise wouldn't have learned how to swim."

Iowa 4-H Center celebrates its 60th anniversary this year

Later as the foundation's executive director, Florine led a capital campaign that expanded and renovated the camp kitchen and dining hall. Leisz notes that over the years "both Florine and Ron have returned to the Iowa 4-H Center for weekend retreats with IFYE (International 4-H Youth Exchange) alumni and to camp with their grandchildren."

The Iowa 4-H Center celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, and annually attracts more than 7,000 individuals with programs for youth ages five to 19, as well as for adults, including 4-H volunteer trainings and corporate retreats and team-building activities. 4-H Center staff include youth from across Iowa and international students who are trained to provide safe and innovative learning opportunities on the camp's climbing tower and zip line, junior-Olympic sized pool, 14 miles of trail, pond and challenge course.

Iowa 4-H Foundation provides funds to deliver 4-H programs

The Iowa 4-H Foundation provides the financial resources to develop and deliver quality 4-H youth programs throughout the state of Iowa. The opportunities provided by the foundation help young people enhance their ability to use critical thinking, leadership, communication and social skills – tools that will give them a competitive edge in their future endeavors, says Leisz. The Iowa 4-H Foundation is a charitable 501 (c) 3 organization with a governing board of 35 trustees.
