Global demand for milk and other liquid dairy products will increase about 30% between 2010 and 2020, the 350,000 million liters, according to the Tetra Pak Dairy Index published last week in the Swiss city of Lausanne.
According to the company specialized in food packaging, consumption of liquid dairy products-milk, milkshakes, yoghurt drinks, condensed milk, acidified milk and infant-grow in all world regions except Western Europe, world's biggest per capita milk.
Economic growth and urbanization
This surge in demand is, according to the company, due to economic growth and urbanization in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
In particular, Tetra Pak has attributed this rise in consumption to an increase in the emerging middle class, especially in Asia, which calls for healthy products and packaging that can be purchased at supermarkets and small shops.
More than half of demand in the Asia-Pacific region
Thus, the continued population growth in India, world's top consumer, and the increasing popularity of these products in China will lead at the end of the decade both countries represent more than one third of global consumption of liquid milk and Asia-Pacific region accounted for over half of global demand.
