Health Care Bill Being Readied

Health Care Bill Being Readied

Leadership hoping to have bill on House floor this month.

Representative Joe Courtney, D-Conn., says House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told members to expect something they can sink their teeth into by the caucus meeting on Tuesday. That's the latest word on negotiations on the health care reform bill. House Democratic leaders continued talks on a health care overhaul Friday. The goal is to reach an agreement in principle to blend the House and Senate bills, with the hope it could be brought to the House floor this month.

Representative John Larson, D-Conn., says that as important as health care is, and as front and center as it is in the Beltway, when he goes home they care about health care, but they're focused on jobs. That sentiment seems to be driving House Democrats to take action on health care and then move on to programs that bring jobs to Americans not now working.

President Obama has pledged to publicly campaign the health-care legislation. Speaking at the House Democrats' annual retreat last week, Obama sought to reassure them. Lawmakers in the House are increasingly frustrated not only with Republicans but also with Democrats in the Senate, who they think have weakened the health-care bill and blocked or failed to act on a number of other initiatives.
