Cattle producers from across Iowa will attend the Iowa Cattlemen's Association 2006 Annual Winter Conference Dec. 7 and 8 at the Sheraton Hotel, 1800 50th Street, in West Des Moines. All ICA members and everyone interested in the cattle industry is invited to attend.
The ICA winter meeting offers a wide range of activities – from policy-making, educational sessions and industry updates to a trade show, silent auction and entertainment. Cattle producers will have the chance to help ICA set policies for the year ahead.
The conference kicks off on Thursday, Dec. 7, with the Industry Issues Forum. Featured speakers are Colin Woodall, legislative affairs director at the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture-elect Bill Northey. Woodall will focus on the makeup of the new Congress and how it will affect agriculture, the 2007 Farm Bill, taxes, environmental issues, and animal rights activism. Northey will discuss Iowa agriculture under the new administration and environmental issues. Wendy Wintersteen, Iowa State University Dean of Agriculture, will give an update on ISU research and outreach.
New twist to cattlemen's trade show
New this year is the Table Top Trade Show. More than 20 exhibitors will have table exhibits in the Sheraton Hotel atrium. Trade show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, December 7, and 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, December 8.
A major task during the winter conference is for ICA members to set policy. All three ICA policy committees will meet Thursday, December 7. Several topics are already on the committee agendas and will be discussed in each committee.
* ICA Beef Product Committee agenda includes: feeding co-products related to beef quality; checkoff enhancement report from the national task force; and an export update on the recent Iowa trade mission to Japan.
* ICA Business Issues Committee agenda features resolution on estate taxes; liquid manure on soybean ground; how new state legislature will affect ICA; and noxious weeds.
* ICA Cattle Production Committee agenda includes: national animal identification; mandatory price reporting; and embryo transfer. Other topics for each committee will also be brought forward by ICA members.
Info Expo offers updates on timely topics
Back by popular demand, the Info Expo on December 7 offers 30-minute mini-sessions packed with information and education for conference attendees. Among the topics this year are: Innovative Programs for County Associations; Managing Fescue; Status and Outlook of Renewable Fuels; EPDs for Dummies; Alternative Facilities for Smaller Feedlots; Using Ethanol Co-products by Cow-calf Producers; Membership Recruitment; Biosecurity Basics; and Adding Value with Age and Source Verification.
The conference includes a luncheon and an evening banquet honoring cattle industry leaders. During the luncheon on December 7, awards are presented to the Iowa Seedstock Producer of the Year and Elanco Animal Health scholarship winners. An "Evening with Friends" is planned for December 7. During banquet festivities, the Hall of Fame, Woman of the Year, and Iowa Beef Backer awards are presented. A special treat this year is comedian Perry Edenburn as "Harley Worthit," who performs regularly in many of the theater shows at Branson, Mo.
Get the lowdown on price outlook
The Iowa Cattlemen's Foundation is preparing a silent auction of valuable and interesting items. It's a great place to browse for your cowboy's Christmas. Proceeds from the ICF silent auction will be used to provide youth scholarships and other educational programs for ICA members and families.
The ICA Winter Conference continues for a half day of activities on Friday, December 8. The popular Iowa Public Television show "Market to Market" with host Mark Pearson will be re-enacted at 8 a.m. Market analysts Sue Martin and Tomm Pfitzenmaier will share their opinions about agricultural prices and markets for the months ahead.
The ICA Winter Conference wraps up with the ICA and the Iowa Beef Industry Council annual meetings. The meetings will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on December 8.
