Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey last week announced that the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has hired three new bureau chiefs to provide leadership in three program areas within the department.
“The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is very fortunate to have these highly-qualified and motivated leaders taking on new responsibilities within the department,” says Northey.
Jill Paxton is the new coordinator of the Horse and Dog Breeding Program. The Horse & Dog Breeding Program is intended to stimulate and promote the breeding of higher-quality racing horses and dogs in Iowa. The program provides financial incentives to owners and breeders of racing animals.
Paxton previously was the equestrian program director at Alfred University in New York. She is glad to be back in Iowa and is looking forward to meeting and working with the people of the horse and dog racing industry in Iowa.
David W. Brown is the new chief of the Dairy Products Control Bureau. The bureau is responsible for ensuring the safety and quality of milk and milk products supplied to the consuming public. This is achieved through regular inspections of both dairy farms and processing facilities.
David Brown previously worked for the department as a dairy production inspector in southeast Iowa.
Darryl Brown is the new chief of the department’s Weights and Measures Bureau. The Weights and Measures Bureau is responsible for maintaining equity in the marketplace by improving the accuracy of measurements. The bureau has 10 inspectors located throughout the state that handle most inspections.
Darryl Brown previously spent 31 years in weights and measures for Iowa as a large capacity scale inspector, moisture meter inspector, program manager and bureau chief until retiring in December 2003. Since then he has worked part time for the department in a variety of other capacities.
In addition, he has served as chairman of the Central Weights and Measures Association as well as on a number of committees within the National Conference on Weights and Measures, including the board of directors and chairman of the Specifications and Tolerances Committee.
Northey, a corn and soybean farmer from Spirit Lake, is serving his first term as Iowa Secretary of Agriculture. His priorities are to advance the opportunities in renewable energy, promote conservation and stewardship, and tell the story of Iowa agriculture.
