Iowa Forage & Grassland Council Conference November 22-23

Anyone interested in hay or forage production and marketing is welcome to attend the 2010 Iowa Forage and Grassland conference in Des Moines.

If you are a producer or anyone involved in hay or forage production, plan to attend the 2010 Iowa Forage & Grassland Conference November 22-23 in Des Moines. It will be held at the Airport Holiday Inn.

Registration gets underway Monday, November 22 at 5:30 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m. a roundtable discussion of producers and hay/forage industry exhibitors will start the meeting. On Tuesday, November 23 registration is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The main meeting is all day on November 23. Here is the agenda for that day:

* 9 a.m. to 9: 45 a.m. "Roundup Ready Alfalfa and Varieties" will be discussed by Erin Herbold, staff attorney for the Center for Ag Law and Taxation at Iowa State University. Bert Strayer of Des Moines Forage & Turf Seed Company will also take part in this presentation and give the industry's view.

* 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Breakout sessions I: Baleage production will be discussed by Kendall Guither. Fencing will be discussed by representatives from Premier One Sheep Supplies.

* 10:30 to 11 a.m. a break will be held for attendees to visit with exhibitors in the tradeshow area at the conference.

* 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Breakout sessions II: This will include a baleage discussion with Kendall Guither and representatives from Kuhn Manufacturing. A presentation on measuring and managing beef profitability will be made by Jim Munch of Deer Run Farm. Baleage wrapping do's and don'ts will be discussed by Ron Zygarlicke of H&S Manufacturing Company.

* 12 noon to 1 p.m.  Lunch & Program: IFGC annual meeting and awards

* 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Breakout sessions III: Forage inoculants will be discussed by Al Deaton of Deaton Mfg. and questions and answers will be moderated by Kendall Guither. Using forage crops for biomass production will be presented by Mark DePoy, coordinator of Southern Iowa RC&D.

* 1:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. a break will be held for attendees to visit with exhibitors

* 2:15 to 3 p.m. Breakout sessions IV: Developing anaerobic digester capacity in Iowa will be discussed by Al Goldberg, director of the Iowa Methane Working Group. Direct marketing of grass-fed beef will be discussed by Jim Munch of Deer Run Farm.

* 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.  Iowa Department of Transportation regulations and programs that forage-livestock producers need to know about.

The meeting will adjourn at 3:45 p.m. Registration is $40 if registered by November 16. Registration after that date and registration at the door is $50 per person.
