The 2011 Iowa Hereford Tour, sponsored by the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association, will be held Sunday, August 28, in southeast Iowa.
The tour will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Keosauqua Sale Co., 20555 Hwy. 1, at Keosauqua, Iowa. That's where part of the herd of owners Bill and Becky Goehring will be on display.
Visitors will depart from that location and go on a pasture tour of Goehring Herefords at Libertyville. Featured in the August 2011 issue of Hereford World, Bill Goehring has been involved with Herefords since age 10 and has owned and operated the Keosauqua Sale Co. since 1986. The family runs approximately 100 registered cows and has developed a strong commercial bull business in the 3-state area of Iowa, Missouri and Illinois.
Participants will then gather at the lodge at Lacey State Park, Keosauqua, at 11:30 a.m. for a Dutch treat lunch and the IHBA's annual meeting. At the meeting four new directors will be elected and the late Keith Hoelzen of Burlington, will be inducted into the Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame. Guest speaker will be Dave Bealman, owner of Dave's Old Fashion Meats, who will share success stories of using meat from only whitefaced cattle in his business. Other speakers at the lunch and the afternoon stop are yet to be confirmed.
Luncheon and annual meeting, then afternoon tour of K7 Herefords
Following lunch, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the group will visit the Tom Heidt family's K7 Herefords near Lockridge. Tom and Jo Heidt and family have a Line One based herd consisting of around 70 spring production cows and 30-plus fall production cows. They exhibited the reserve champion pen of three heifers at the 2010 National Western Stock Show in Denver.
The public is invited to attend all or part of the tour. Door prizes will be awarded at each stop. For more directions, additional information or lunch reservations, contact tour chairmen Tom Heidt, 608-574-2309, or Bill Goehring, 641-919-8951.
