Learn About Green Farmstead Partner Program

A well-designed tree and shrub planting can provide numerous benefits for farmers, their livestock and their neighbors.

The public is invited to Ben Waigand's hog farm Wednesday, July 20, 2011 to learn how today's farmers care for the environment. The event is being hosted by the Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers (CSIF). Activities begin at 11:30 a.m. and include a free lunch followed by a workshop featuring Waigand's recently installed shelterbelt through CSIF's Green Farmstead Partner program.

"The purpose of the workshop is to showcase responsible and successful livestock farming through the planting of windbreaks and shelterbelts," says Brian Waddingham, CSIF executive director. "Participating in the Green Farmstead Partner program allows livestock farmers, like the Waigands, to gain timely and cost-effective assistance in the planting of trees and shrubs around new and existing cattle feedlots, hog and poultry barns."

A well-designed tree and shrub planting can provide numerous benefits for farmers, their livestock and their neighbors. During the chilly Iowa winters, it can help control snow deposition and can help cool the air in the hot summer months. The installation of trees and shrubs also enhances soil and water quality, conserves energy usage, improves site aesthetics and creates a more pleasant working condition for farmers and their employees year-round. Iowa State University research has found that windbreaks can reduce odor from livestock barns by 10% to 15%.

Another example farmers and environmentalists working together

The Green Farmstead Partner program is a joint effort of CSIF, Trees Forever and the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association. "It's another example of how farmers and the environmental community are working together," Waddingham says. The workshop is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. You'll also enjoy a free, delicious pork lunch.
