The National Research Council on Wednesday announced plans to conduct a study to review available information on genetically engineered crops and food within the context of the global food and agricultural system, calling on agriculture professionals to serve on an assessment committee.
The committee will review available literature and research and will examine questions raised in previous NRC reports addressing food safety, environmental, social, economic, regulatory and other issues surrounding GE crops and food.
The study will be conducted by a committee of approximately 15 members appointed by the National Academies. NRC is seeking nominations for the potential committee members.
Committee members may include scientists and experts in the following areas: agronomy, agricultural production, genomics, crop biotechnology/transgenic technologies, ecology, toxicology, weed science, entomology, public health, sociology, risk communication, food safety, food science, plant patents, U.S. and international regulatory law, trade, international agricultural development and economics.

Potential committee members may be academics, government employees, and individuals from nongovernmental organizations or industry.
NRC requests that nominators suggest individuals who are broadly knowledgeable, distinguished within their respective communities, and able to work well with others in analyzing information and developing consensus.
The final committee will include a mixture of perspectives that will contribute to the study's ability to develop supportable conclusions about the state of science related to genetically engineered crops, NRC said.
