NFU Urges Wind Energy Tax Credit Extension

Farmers Union calling on Senate to renew wind energy Production Tax Credit.

National Farmers Union is urging support for the nation's growing wind industry by calling on Senate leaders to extend the wind energy Production Tax Credit.

NFU President Tom Buis wrote Senate Finace Committee Chairman Charles Grassley and Ranking member Max Baucus, urging the Senators to support wind power by extending the PTC before it expires Dec. 31.

"If we are serious about striving for energy independence, as I know both of you are, then we need the legislative tools available to reach that goal," Buis says. "The PTC is one of those tools."

Buis says NF would like the PTC to be a long-term 20-year extension, and include active, not passive, income tax credits. The organization also wants a PTC that will encourage local wind turbine ownership, manufacturing development and operations, and set higher levels for local, community and farmer-owned wind systems.

"The PTC is vital in the planning and proliferation of wind farms across the United States," Buis says.
