Iowa beef producers are encouraged to ride along on three-state, three-day bus tour of cattle farms and research facilities July 16-18.

Although nearly full, a few spots are still available for Iowa beef producers to attend the upcoming three-day bus tour July 16 through 18 and learn about what's new in the cattle business. The tour starts in southern Iowa and travels through parts of three states--Iowa, Missouri and Illinois—before returning to Iowa.

"This is a unique opportunity, a chance to visit leading cattle farms and research facilities. You'll be able to talk to these producers and to the researchers, hear their presentations, and you'll see and learn about new ideas and practices in cattle management," says the trip's organizer, Joe Sellers. He is an Iowa State University Extension beef program specialist at Chariton, in south central Iowa.

Registration, including the $100 fee must be made quickly to ensure a place for you on the trip. Checks should be made payable and sent to Lucas County Extension, 48293 Hy-Vee Road, Chariton, Iowa 50049. "If you're interested in this trip, you need to contact me as soon as possible," Sellers says. Anyone interested in going on the tour should call him at 641-203-1270 to let him know.

Tour gives you chance to learn from innovative producers and research farms

While the $100 fee covers travel expenses and some meals, participants are responsible for paying for most of their meals and making their own lodging reservations. The tour group will be staying at the Holiday Inn Six Flags in Eureka, Missouri on July 16 and the Holiday Inn in Mount Vernon, Illinois on July 17. To make hotel reservations, attendees should call the Eureka location at 800-782-8108 and mention "Land O'Lakes Purina Feed Iowa group," and the Mount Vernon location at 800-243-7171, and mention "Iowa Beef Tour group."

The bus will pick up passengers on July 16, at the Lucas County Fairgrounds in Chariton at 7 a.m.; Hy-Vee parking lot in Albia at 7:45 a.m.; and the Wal-Mart parking lot in Centerville at 8 a.m. The trip will cover innovative beef operations and visit with successful producers and cutting edge researchers in Iowa, Illinois and Missouri, Sellers says. This includes Harold Trump's beef cow operation near Luray, Missouri; Sydenstricker Angus of Mexico, Missouri; Land O'Lakes Purina Feed Longview Animal Nutrition Center in Gray Summit, Missouri; University of Illinois Dixon Springs Research Center in southern Illinois; and Illinois beef operations including the Ted Krauskoph, Trevor Toland, Steve and Nate Fogelsong, and Mike McClelland farms.

Tour sponsors include Purina Animal Nutrition, Community 1st Credit Union, Great Western Bank, Midwest Heritage Bank, Lucas County Extension and Outreach, and the Iowa Beef Center at Iowa State University.
