Survey Shows 66% Of Iowa Farms Have Internet Access

Latest USDA survey shows 68% of Iowa farms either own or are leasing a computer in 2011, and 66% have Internet access. Both are up slightly from 2009 when previous survey was conducted.

In mid-August, USDA released the results of its 2011 survey of farm computer ownership and use. Greg Thessen, director of the Iowa Office of USDA's National Ag Statistics Service, notes that 68% of Iowa farms now own or lease a computer. In the U.S. that number is 63%, so Iowa is slightly ahead of the U.S. in that regard.

However, he says you should note that size of the farm makes a difference. In 2011, 84% of U.S. farms with sales and government payments of $250,000 or more have access to a computer, 83% own or lease a computer, 72% are using a computer for their farm business, and 82% have Internet access.

For farms in the U.S. with sales and government payments between $100,000 and $249,999, the figures are 68% have access to a computer, 68% own or lease a computer, 52% are using a computer for their farm business, and 67% have Internet access. Of the farms with sales and government payments between $10,000 and $99,999, 63% report having computer access, 62% own or lease a computer, 41% use a computer for their farm business, and 60% have Internet access. Following is a comparison of Iowa and U.S. trends.
