Corn's national condition slipped 1 point to 68% good to excellent in Monday's USDA crop progress report while soybeans stayed at 63%.
Spring wheat harvest reached 88% versus the 62% average. Top producer North Dakota was 85% harvested versus the 58% average.
In corn, 9% was mature and 60% dented versus 7% and 50% last year and the respective 15% and 60% averages.
In top producer Iowa, corn slipped 1 point to 81% good to excellent, Illinois slipped 1% to 55% and Indiana was unchanged at 47%. Missouri's corn stayed at 51% good/excellent.
Nationwide, soybeans were at 93% in setting pods, versus 94% a year ago and the 95% average, while 9% were dropping leaves versus 5% a year ago and the 7% average.
In Iowa, rain and saturated fields limited fieldwork to 3.9 days last week.
"Showers and thunderstorms brought rain to all but far southeastern Iowa between Thursday morning and Saturday morning. Very heavy rain fell Friday along and just south of U.S. Highway 20 from Fort Dodge east to Waterloo with four to six inch amounts common," the Iowa report said. "Unofficial rain totals between 9 and 10 inches were received from southeast Webster and southern Hamilton counties."
Iowa continued to relay reports of sudden death syndrome and white mold in soybean fields. Its soybeans were rated 76% good to excellent, down 1 point from a week ago.
Illinois had 6.6 days for fieldwork as rainfall averaged 0.23 inch for the week. Illinois soybeans improved 1 point to 53% good/excellent.
In Indiana, cool weather allowed disease to persist in corn and soybeans and slowed maturity in the corn.
"In the final weeks of maturity, the cool and dry weather threatens under-filling pods in soybeans and kernels in corn," the Indiana report said.
Indiana's soybeans were rated 47% good to excellent, unchanged from a week ago.
Nationally, sorghum was 29% mature and 15% harvested versus the 30% and 23% averages. The crop was rated 68% good to excellent, unchanged for last week.
In cotton, 22% of the bolls were open versus 27% average. The crop was rated 54% good/excellent, up 1 point from a week ago.
