Winter wheat conditions declined last week, weighed down by the Plains crop, which continues to struggle with a lack of rain, the weekly USDA crop progress and condition report said on Monday.

The first USDA corn planting report of the season showed 2% of the crop in the ground, slightly behind last year's 3% and the five-year average's 5%. Texas corn was 46% planted to lead all states, followed by North Carolina at 25% and Kansas at 14%. Lesser percentages were noted in four other states.

Winter wheat condition was 42% good/excellent, 39% fair, 14% poor and 55 very poor, down slightly from a week ago, but better than the year ago 34% good/excellent reading. Kansas wheat was at 28% good to excellent, 44% fair, 20% poor and 8% very poor.

Conditions may improve for the Plains wheat as rain is forecast for much of the area on Monday and through the week. Those forecasts prompted a 4% to 5% drop in wheat futures markets on Monday.

Spring wheat planting also was released in the USDA crop progress report, with 17% in the ground, ahead of last year's 5% and the average's 11%.

Topsoil moisture was plentiful in the Midwest and Southeast, but adequate or less in the Plains. Iowa was 81% adequate to surplus, Illinois 93%, while Kansas was at 44%, Nebraska 53%, Oklahoma 42% and Texas 65%.

Winter wheat was 6% headed, versus 5% a year ago and the 8% average, the USDA crop progress report said. California led that category with 65%, followed by Texas at 22%.
