Vilsack Says He Will Not Be Next Ag Secretary

Former Iowa governor disputes earlier reports.

The Washington Post last week reported that according to a source close to the transition that former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack was "a near shoo-in" to be named as the next Secretary of Agriculture. However on Sunday, Vilsack made the statement that he would not be the next leader of USDA.

"I would have to speculate that I was in fact in the running and further speculate as to why I was no longer. I do not think it prudent or appropriate to speculate about either," said Vilsack.

Vilsack went on to say that Obama has many interests to consider and an abundance of talent from both parties from which to choose.

Other possible nominations that have been speculated upon are Tom Buis, president of the National Farmers Union, former Congressman Charlie Stenholm from Texas, and House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson, D-Minn. However Peterson has repeatedly said he was not a candidate for the position.
