Planting a cover crop for the first time in 2017, Kevin Cooper hired a custom applicator to interseed oats into soybeans in August. He likes the benefit of early stand establishment of the cover crop.
CSP PROGRAM HELPS
Soil conservationist Hillary Olson with NRCS and landowner Kevin Cooper discuss Cooper’s conservation plan. Cooper seeded cover crops for the first time in 2017 with NRCS assistance through the Conservation Stewardship Program.
Iowa’s 2017 Ag Teacher of the Year, Kevin Cooper, continues to learn about his cropland soils. A decade after he began no-tilling, he seeded an oats cover crop for the first time this fall.
IMPROVING SOIL HEALTH
Kevin Cooper interseeded oats into soybeans on 30 acres in early September. Two months later, the oats are growing strong and keeping a living root system in the soil as a cover crop going into winter, helping improve soil health.
CHOOSING A COVER
There are a number of cover crop species you can plant. Kevin Cooper chose to grow an oats cover crop his first year using a cover. A benefit of oats is early and easy stand establishment for fall erosion protection.
FIELD AS CLASSROOM
As the ag teacher at Nevada High School, Kevin Cooper shares what he learns about soil and water conservation on his farm with his students. “Our ag program at school has benefited from the conservation work on this farm,” he says.
