Beef Demand Remains High

Slowing economy is not yet slowing demand for beef.

Usually when the economy slows down, consumers reduce purchases of choice and prime beef. USDA livestock analyst Shayle Shagam says that is not happening yet.

"The real big indication will probably be starting to appear in the next several months," Shagam says, "As retailers begin to gear up for the grilling season, which is obviously always a time of good demand for beef."

Steer prices are still strong and Shagam says they are likely to stay that way.

"The prices we are looking at are still, even though on average for the year, they will probably be a little bit below what we saw last year," says Shagam. "We are still looking at prices to be in the low 90s in 2008."
