Another new plant in Iowa has started producing high-quality biodiesel. Iowa Renweable Energy, LLC, a biodiesel plant that is equipped for multiple feedstocks, including animal fats, recently started production at a new state-of-the-art facility in the industrial park on the east edge of Washington, Iowa.
Leaders of the Iowa Soybean Association are pleased that the new biodiesel plant is in operation and congratulate the Renewable Energy Group, Inc. on the opening of a fifth 30-million-gallon-per-year facility. Renewable Energy Group, Inc. works with private investors who own the biodiesel plant. The role of REG includes plant construction, on-going plant management, and marketing of the biodiesel.
"We've been working on this project for the past two years and it stayed on scheduele throughout the construction period. The plant has even started production a month early. We had originally planned on an August opening," said John Heisdorffer, chairman of the ISA Demand Committee.
Iowa Renewable Fuels Association pleased with new factory
The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association today congratulated Iowa Renewable Energy, LLC for beginning production at its biodiesel refinery near Washington, Iowa. The facility processes soybean oil and animal fats into 30 million gallons of biodiesel and 3 million gallons of glycerin annually.
"New generation biodiesel refineries like Iowa Renewable Energy are making Iowa the world leader in biodiesel quality and production," said Monte Shaw, IRFA Executive Director. "Iowa Renewable Energy creates quality jobs, produces an environmentally superior fuel and reduces our use of imported oil. No other diesel fuel option can match it."
New plants helps offer jobs in Washington
Heisdorffer is enthusiastic about the economic advantages the new biodiesel plant has brought to the community of Washington and the surround area.
"During construction, more than 100 people worked on the plant, which was a real benefit to the local economy. The biodiesel plant will continue to make a contribution to this area because about 30 full-time employees are needed to operate the plant," said Heisdorffer.
Iowa leads the pack in renewable fuels production
"The plant creates 28 new good-paying jobs and most were filled with local people," stated Dick Gallagher, IRE Board member and the plant's representative to the IRFA. "With up to a hundred people working to build the plant, it was quite a boost to the local economy over the last year. Now plant operations will continue to pump millions annually into the region."
Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production. Iowa has 12 biodiesel refineries with a combined annual capacity of nearly 230 million gallons in operation. Two biodiesel refineries under construction will add 90 million gallons of capacity. In addition, Iowa has 28 ethanol refineries with the capacity to produce over 1.9 billion gallons annually. There are 20 ethanol refineries under construction or expansion that will add nearly 1.5 billion gallons of annual capacity. Many additional renewable fuels projects are under development.
