Look At Alternatives For Machinery Ownership

Acquiring farm machinery and machinery services is focus of an ISU Extension workshop March 2 in southeast Iowa.

Iowa State University Extension will offer a workshop on "Acquiring Machinery and Machinery Services" on March 2, 2011 for farmers who are evaluating farm machinery options. The workshop will discuss owning, leasing and renting farm equipment, and strategies for sharing machinery and labor in farming operations.

The workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 2 at the Letts Community Center, 125 Iowa Street, Letts, Iowa. Registration for the workshop closes Feb. 25 and the fee is $15. Register by contacting the ISU Extension Louisa County Office at 319-523-2371 or [email protected].

You need to register by February 25 if you want to attend

The workshop is designed to help farmers evaluate alternatives for machinery acquisition and use, says Jim Jensen, ISU Extension farm management specialist in southeast Iowa. The financial aspects of ownership, leasing and machinery sharing arrangements will be explored.

ISU Extension economist William Edwards, along with Georgeanne Artz, an ISU assistant professor of agricultural economics, will cover machinery acquisition options, labor and machinery sharing arrangements, role of traits and skills, and operational and organization considerations. Jensen is also one of the speakers who will help cover these topics on the program.

"Farmers who are looking for ways to meet their crop production capacity needs and who want to keep costs low will find options for them to investigate at the workshop," says Jensen. Workshop participants will receive the "Farm Machinery and Labor Sharing" manual, a MidWest Plan Service publication, as part of the their registering and attending the March 2 program.
